Arthur Berger - Chamber Music For 13 Players

I. Variations

II. Allegro Moderato, Leggiero

Gunther Schuler, conductor

Original Liner Notes

There was almost always a quality of charm in Arthur Berger's music, this piece has more of it than most pieces of the time it was written.   I seem to recall reading Berger say it was a piece in which his free use of 12 tone procedures were inspired by the Italian composers like Dallipiccola and Nono. The sound they achieved even more so than formal considerations.   But I don't have the time to go look for that quote just now.

I really miss Arthur Berger

Oh fuck yourself. As you've told me on several occasions, people die. Get over it.

    1. Oh, Steve, you're just so jealous. But how can I miss you if you won't go away?

I didn't whine and keen over him like you and the histrionic chorus at Duncan's do whenever any geezerly superannuated pop musician does. Angrily raging at God over the injustice of some druggie, drunk guy dying when they're 73.

    1. You should go look at that Trump Tantrum video, you could learn a lot about yourself from it.

Death denial never got anyone anywhere.

  3. I mean really -- why would anybody care that 90-something Chuck Berry died.

    1. Go ahead and care, it's not going to do much good. You're the one who took the opportunity to diss him, I didn't even know about the accusations made against him until you brought them up.

Lots of people die when they're in their 30s, 20s, before they're teenage. That's worth caring about. Someone who dies at 90, they outlived the average by a good period. If they die of natural causes at that age, that's not bad. If they'd died the age Bessie Smith was under the conditions she did, that's worth writing a play about.

Why don't you go read The Jilting of Granny Wetherall and scare yourself silly.

The movie they made with Geraldine Fitzgerald was, for a change, pretty good. She was great in it.

    1. Yeah, you did. As I mentioned the other day, you exhibit signs of dementia. Though, it being you, it's going to be a hard diagnosis. Like Reagan, you don't have much of what you use to get that.

    1. You display more similarities with Donald Trump every week, if not every day. You're a lot more alike than you'd ever want anyone to notice.
