OK, that next to last glass ceiling is gone, now for the big one.
My mother had hoped to see a woman as president of the United States, I hope to be able to write in November that she missed it by three years. Another of my friends, another very old woman, missed the possibility by one year. I hope this is the year that no more old or young women never have to miss seeing a woman as president of the United States, ever again.
But, as important as that is, and it is, very important, it isn't the biggest reason for Hillary Clinton to be elected. First and foremost, her opponent, the only other person who will be president of the United States next year is an ignorant, phony, bullying, made-for-"reality TV" strongman fascist whose nomination has empowered fascists. He is, also, in league with domestic, American fascists and foreign states controlled by organized crime. Most ironically, American fascists in the Republican Party have nominated a man who is pretty much a wholly owned property of Russian oligarchs and other successors of the Soviet Communist Party in Russia and in the former Republics. After more than eighty years of Republicans slamming Democrats for being influenced or dominated by Russian commies, their presidential nominee is financed by them.
Donald Trump is a very, very dangerous man as are his true believing supporters. I don't dare to think of what their reaction to him losing the election might be but I'm terrified of what will happen if he wins the election.
Aside from that, this is a presidential contest between a woman who is, beyond any rational doubt, the most investigated, the most scrutinized, perhaps the person whose enemies could find nothing on most often, of any person who has ever run for president and a man who will not release his income tax returns and financial records. It is between a woman who is likely the most qualified and prepared person to have ever run for the presidency and a man who is the embodiment of ignorant, unknowing unsuitability for the job. Even Republicans seem to be afraid of him receiving the confidential briefings that it has become common for major party candidates to be given - not least of all because the man is so apt to blurt things out of his stream of semi-consciousness without regard for the consequences - though his connections with some really dangerous and shady underworld figures is also something worth thinking about. Jack Kennedy had indirect links with organized criminals, they're Trump's business partners.
There have been stark choices between the Democratic and Republican nominees before, notably in those three years in which the play-left has had a hand in the election of some of our worst presidents, Nixon, Reagan and Bush II. But there has never been a clearer chance for the country to go head first into the pit than this election. Hillary Clinton simply must win this election, Donald Trump must lose it and those who have endorsed him must pay a huge price for allowing him to get this close to the presidency of the United States.
