"It seems to me that to organize on the basis of feeding people or righting social injustice and all that is very valuable. But to rally people around the idea of modernism, modernity, or something is simply silly. I mean, I don't know what kind of a cause that is, to be up to date. I think it ultimately leads to fashion and snobbery and I'm against it."

Orrin Evans Trio - Autumn Leaves
Orrin Evans, piano
Vincent Archer, bass
Obed Calvaire, drums
I love how you have to really listen for the standard in the improvisation when Orrin Evans is playing it. Good for the attention.
Considering who he regularly has ask to play with him, the likes of Kurt Rosenwinkle, Chris Potter, Robin Eubanks, etc. clearly he's a musician's musician and not a pop critic's musician. As Charles Ives would say, you have to use your ears and mind while he's playing, two things you hate to have to do.
God, that's awful. To steal an old Sid Ceasar joke, obviously they have a guy in the band on radar in case Orrin gets too close to a melody.
