Walter Brueggemann - What's In Your Wallet - "The only way out of this circle of debt is by jubilee"

Walter Brueggemann from two months ago, today.   This is more radical than anything I noticed in The Nation or In These Times for the past ten years.

  1. I became truly radical in seminary. Brueggemann had been Dean of my seminary shortly before I got there, and had trained many of the teachers there.

And yeah, I've never seen anything as radical as the teachings of the Bible that even "atheists" don't talk about. Funny how I always hear about the she-bears, never about Jubilee.

    1. When you read John Paul II's pastoral letters and they're more radical than what you'll see in the lefty magazines, it's a sign that there's something wrong with the secular left.

I'm afraid I've scandalized a number of my family and friends by saying that I don't think the left has a chance in hell of doing anything as long as it's bound up with atheism and secularism. It certainly hasn't done much since the death of The Reverend MLK jr. Someone on one of the blogs was yearning for a revival of Marxism, considering the body count, I don't see that as morally different from wishing for a revival of Nazism.

I really do believe that for most of the Marxists and atheists on the alleged left, atheism was always their primary interest, not equality, not economic justice, not civil rights, not even not murdering millions of people because almost all of them were OK as long as it was their favored dictator who was doing it. I'd include many of the people I once held as heroes to be included in that.
