It's the St. Gaudens Adams Memorial for Clover Adams, Henry Adams' wife who committed suicide due to severe depression. The popular name for it is "Grief" though St. Gaudens intended it to represent the mystery of the hereafter. It can stand for the self-destruction of American Democracy, I think.
