IF I WANTED to take up your time with repeating something it wouldn't be something you certainly already heard to death. I'd repost the great, neglected and too little known Andrew Hill's brilliant compositions. Starting with the first one posted here,
Smoke Stack
Piano: Andrew Hill
Double Bass: Richard Davis
Double Bass: Eddie Khan
Drums: Roy Haynes
Yes, Andrew Hill used two basses for this recording. I could have posted this as a memorial for my recently departed friend who studied drums alongside Roy Haynes, though he gave it up for a STEM career.
TODAY'S ESSAY QUESTION:
ReplyDeleteJohn Coltrane would have been bigger than the Beatles if not for racism, heroin and monaural recording.
Discuss.
He beat heroin, he didn't beat racism, including that of the commercial promotion of recordings that you were a tiny part of. His musical accomplishments were gigantic as opposed to those of the over-promoted, over-rated white-boys you always, inevitably, seem to favor over anyone OF COLOR. You know, entirely lesser entities like Chet Baker.
