Hate Mail - Oh, I'm Busy, Have A Controversial Video - Science Vs God - Is There A Life Force That Transcends Matter? | Under The Skin with Russell Brand

I wasn't familiar with Russell Brand before listening to this, looking forward to more of his interviews, etc.  Rupert Sheldrake, ever the voice of reason, goes over some points he's made before but also some new things.   You can contrast his tone and how he calls for experiment and investigation, you know, science, instead of ideological assertion of confident ignorance.   I certainly don't agree with everything said but it's so nice to hear a reasonable discussion of these things.

  1. I haven't listened (yet), but I've asked my students before (often, really): What's the difference between a corpse and a sleeping body? A: one of them will get up again. Why can we assemble the materials, even the cells, of a living thing, but not give it "life"? What is the animating force that distinguishes the corpse and the sleeper? Where does it come from, and why does it leave? Because the body can no longer sustain life functions is a circular argument.

Which is not to say the scientific answer as to be the "soul." The popular non-religious answer in the early 20th century was "elan vital." Still circular, though.

    1. Considering you've never let a cliche go unrepeated, a routine unstolen, a lame assed metaphor or simile go unburdened with a repetition, your decision to take that category was going with your strong suit. Or it would be if you had any clue into your own practice. Outside of that you'd really be in jeopardy.

You really didn't understand any of it, did you.
