"It seems to me that to organize on the basis of feeding people or righting social injustice and all that is very valuable. But to rally people around the idea of modernism, modernity, or something is simply silly. I mean, I don't know what kind of a cause that is, to be up to date. I think it ultimately leads to fashion and snobbery and I'm against it."

Rowan Williams on Marilynne Robinson's Gilead cycle and Lila and everything else.
I have very recently read Gilead because of Marilynne Robinson being mentioned here. I found the book so moving I followed it right up with Lila and now am working through Home. Rowan Williams' discussion was so insightful and moving. I will need to listen to it again. The central theme that we are saved together and because of each other is enormously powerful, and very humbling. There is much more I would like to say, but I think I should really reflect and discern first. Thank you for providing this.

ReplyDeleteIt's a pleasure. I thought I should go back and read the novels again after listening to Rowan Williams on them.
